ON BOARD COMPUTING AND DATA MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

 

On Board Computing and data management system is like the ‘brain’ of the satellite. It performs logical and arithmetic calculations along with generated data processing to keep all the subsystems of the satellite autonomously working in space.

The complete subsystem’s design consists of the following parts

  •          On Board Computing

a.       Hardware

The hardware consists of all the necessary (including redundancies) hardware components for this ‘brain’ to perform its functions. It consists of microcontrollers, memories, oscillator circuits, Bus Interfaces and related circuitry

b.      Software

This consists of all the necessary intangible components to run our system autonomously. The software design consists of development of modules, programmes for regular housekeeping and to stabilize the satellite when in emergency conditions and bring back to the normal or ‘best to normal’ condition.

  •        Data Management

Data Management consists of all data processing units to ensure the safe and secured recording and transmitting of the various useful data collected in the form of payload data, health logs, etc. The design phase includes calculations regarding the size of data to be stored, ensure security of data by employing various Error Detection and Correction methods (EDAC), data compression and data handling techniques.

 

What we will do as a part of OBC System?

  •          Pre Designing and Designing Phase

a.              We will design and test the complete layout of the computer system specifically specifying the types of hardware components to be used by analysing various OTS (Off-the-shelf) products and if absolutely necessary design them by ourselves.

b.               Alongside we will also develop software modules for the Satellite’s housekeeping,  data management, recovery of satellite from emergency conditions, etc

  •          Interfacing Phase

    It includes the interfacing of the system with all the other sub systems and correction of errors.

  •          Integration Phase 

              It includes the integration of satellite into a fully autonomous system and related testing.
